JCI Apex
Background
JCI Apex, one of the 21 chapters affiliated to the JCI Hong Kong, was established in the year of 1994. We are the only chapter using Putonghua as our official spoken language. Apex is the vertex of a triangle, which resembles goals and dreams. Apex also means the summit of a mountain. As such, as our name suggests, we seek to excel ourselves individually and collectively as an organisation. We adhere to the missions of the JCI, along which we learn by doing through projects and initiatives under the four areas of opportunities, namely Leadership Development (LD), Community Development (CD), International Affairs (IA) and Business Affairs (BA), thereby creating positive changes to ourselves and the community.

「做個不倒翁」 home-safety survey
Hong Kong’s ageing population has made safety at home and in housing estates a serious issue. JCI Apex therefore ran the 「長者家居安全」 survey and released the findings to the media. Legislative Council Member Hon Hung Kam-in, MH, and Mr Kenneth Au-Yeung, President of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association, spoke at the briefing. Physiotherapy students from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University demonstrated the 「防跌八式」 exercises. Reports in several news outlets brought the safety of older people’s homes to public attention.

The briefing depended on the organising committee. JCI Apex will next work with 「小修繕·大義意」 on workshops that teach how to install handrails, and with district councillors to fit 「防跌扶手」 in older people’s homes. Members are invited to take part, so that older people can live more safely.
「企業杏林‧智慧領航」, 「做個不倒翁」 and JCI Leader Maker
JCI Apex’s programmes this year have been full.
Business: 「企業杏林‧智慧領航」. The theme uses the chapter’s position as Hong Kong’s only Putonghua chapter, and the shift in government language from “super-connector” to “super value-adder”. Three mainland business study tours, to Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing, give Hong Kong young people a high-level bridge to mainland markets, resources and contacts.
Community: the flagship 「做個不倒翁」. It put fall prevention for older people in front of the community: 576 grassroots older people were interviewed; 1,300 learned the eight fall-prevention movements; grab bars were installed in 100 grassroots homes; 180 young volunteers took part; and 95 physiotherapy students joined.
Leadership: Apex’s original strategy game, JCI Leader Maker. After months of design, production and revision, the JCI Apex team released a game that teaches new members how JCI is built and where the areas of opportunity lie. It was promoted at the Asia-Pacific Conference.
Leadership flagship: 「『築』夢寶石．無限可能」. With the Junior Police Call and the alumni association of University of Hong Kong scholarship athletes, the project gave about 290 local and non-Chinese-speaking secondary students career development and master-of-ceremonies training. A “human library” of guests from different fields, plus practice in movement, interviewing and video editing, builds resilience and expression, and encourages students to chase a dream across cultures.
